bring your mouth to your food [bend down to your eating utensil] or your food to your mouth [sit up straight and bring the utensil to your mouth]?
i used to do the latter, but i guess i've become a lazy, impolite, and unlady-like American and take my mouth to my foooooooood!
the reason i ask is because i was listening to the radio and a british woman was on talking about the horrid etiquette of American people while eating. she was talking about how we all take our mouths to our food. so ever since, at restaurants i have taken notice to how people eat and have noticed a lot of people do bend down to take a bite of fooooooooooood.
just curious.

some of you are a little confused by what i mean, if you bend down even slightly you're taking your mouth to your food, not your food to your mouth.
i'm saying when you take food to your mouth, you're actually LIFTING UP your hand with the eating utensil and proceeding to shove the food in your mouth-no bending down.

Don't get me wrong, I've always maintained very good posture. But I suppose I'd be considered a "horrid American" (as though American were an insult) with my eating habits.
I only thought that I was being POLITE, not IMPOLITE, by putting my face near my plate so that my food stays ON the plate. If I carried the food to my mouth, I would end up dripping all along my nice, clean shirt (especially with messy food!). That is not proper etiquette, is it?
I KNEW I'd find a loophole!

It really depends on what I'm eating. If it's a food I know to be messy then I bring my mouth closer to the food. At least over the plate so I don't get it all over me. Honestly, I really dislike being labeled and judged by some woman that doesn't even know me. For that matter, I don't really have any interest in knowing her.

If I am alone and eating alone in my home I bend my head down. If I am out eating then I bring the fork to my mouth. I had a mom that would slap us if we didn't eat right. Never to much food on the folk, don't use that folk and so on......I once ate and looked in a mirror while doing so because I didn't close my mouth. ha ha
SO....When I am alone I relax as just eat.

The thing is, all countries have different ideas of what's "rude" and what isn't. I don't much care what other people think of what I'm doing because there are so many "rules" (Because they are just opinions. Everyone has a different idea of what's "right" and what's "wrong" ). Mind you, I don't burp or fart in public, etc. etc.....
I do both though(No, not burp AND fart in public xD ). I bring my food to my mouth while I'm hunched over due to back problems and an obsession with keeping messy foods out of my lap.
So there. >>

I bend down over the plate then bring the food to my mouth because I'm afraid I'll drop it all over the place.

I kinda go half and half. I bring the food half way up and I go half way down.
Also, American's cut their food with a fork and knife and eat while they cut with both utensils still in their hands. Europeans cut a few bites, put the knife down, and slowly eat what they cut. I'm American in that aspect. LoL. I grew up with an older brother who was in football and had to learn to eat fast before he ate it all.

It doesn't really make you lazy if you bring your mouth to your food. Same amount of work really. In fact if you bring the spoon to your mouth it might fall off on your lap or something, which is not cool.
