Why does playing an OPEN D and A and D and F# or Bb

give the D Maj cord ?? And likewise in other cords

Or is this something I dont need to know at this point in learning to play.

First of all , Bb shouldn't be there to make it a D major Chord.
Next, chord construction is what can help.
There a LOT of theoy in there and too much to learn.
There are intervals, formulas, major scale and keys...etc.
So, looking at your guitar knowledge, I would say wait for some more time and take that a little later, until you really FEEL that "Yes, I think its the time for me .... "

You need a lot to learn man.
By the way , you made a mistake its F# or Gb , not F# or Bb.
