i'm planning to take a road trip with my friend from la to san diego on thursday. then spend some time in sd on friday and leave san diego for la at 6 pm on a friday, since it's like 3 hours to la and we dont want to get back too late. will it be trafficky leaving sd about 6 pm on a friday to go to la taking 5 north? or would it be worse in the other direction on 5 south for more people coming into sd during that time?

If you can avoid the 5/805 and take the 15 back up and change over to the 10, I think that would cut out a lot of time spent in traffic. My experience is that traffic usually sucks more going INTO sd on the 805/5 around 6pm, but it's also unavoidable going North.

Traffic on 5 is worse on Fri evenings than any other day of the week, but here's the key piece of information. Lots of people head north from work a little earlier on Fri to get a jump start on the traffic, so earlier traffic is actually worse if you leave a little early (say 3pm to 5 pm). If you leave later, say 7 pm, you won't encounter too much traffic, at least in San Diego county. Whoever had the idea to eat dinner in SD before heading north had the right idea. Leave after 7 pm and the ride should be less problematic especially in the del mar dead zone (i.e. Carmel Valley Road to Lomas Santa Fe Rd exits off 5).

It's bad all day. Give yourself about 3hrs. Take the I-605 south to I-5. There are now many lanes around Disneyland area. Use to be only 2-3 lanes during construction. Another reason for Friday traffic... People used to go down to TJ for partying on Friday afternoons and come back on Sunday nights.

It's not that bad driving TO LA on a Friday, most of the traffic is heading into San Diego and not out of it.

my husband and i travel about every weekend from Oceanside SD to LA area and we travel on Friday evenings no matter what time we leave the traffic is horrible only in certain areas but time estimated to get to LA is about 1 hour and 15 min...but it will take us about 2 hours and 30 min. sometimes when the traffic is really bad. some times it will take about 3 hours when traffic is bad half the way there. no matter what time we plan to leave between 2pm to 7pm its really bad. even the carpool lane gets traffic jams and doesnt move as fast as the fast lane or other lanes...well have a nice trip hoped that helped.

My advice is to definatly avoid traveling north to LA from SD durring rush hour traffic! Even though you can use the carpool lane for some of that trip you are going to hit bad traffic at that time. Why not have dinner in SD and then go north? :)

it'll be fine...i travel back and forth to LA and back all the time. 6 pm on a friday to LA is perfect. The only traffic you might hit would be in Del Mar, races or not, every idiot and their mothers are enthralled by that valley, and tend to slow down just to take a look at it. Other than that it should be fine. By the time you touch the LA county part of the freeway, it'll be around 8 and theres definitely no traffic then....good luck...have fun
