It's obvious that most people are a little naive when it comes to phone companies as most of your answers are from people who don't realie that Verizon is not AT&T or the other companies that use sim cards, Verizon uses technologies is CDMA which does not require sims.
Now as far as the Verizon answers, they are partially correct. You do not need to go into any Verizon store or even call Verizon on the phone. By going in or calling there is a possibility of them charging you an activation fee (sometimes you might get a person who is having an exceptionally good day and they'll waive the fee.). And you can upload your phone book (contacts) via your cell phone to Verizon. You can do this by going to the get it now features and looking for the "backup assistant" which will allow you to backup all your contacts onto Verizon's website and then you can sync it to check your cell phone daily at a certain time (this will only work if you cell is turned on) and upload any changes. Your phone as well as the website will tell you that the charge is $1.99 which is a monthly fee, however it will be free if you set up and continue to log into your account via the internet. I do this for mine & my daughter's phone and have not paid one dime. It's a great service. Once you've uploaded your phone you can go onto Verizon Wireless and activate your phone once your account is set up (if you haven't already done so), go to "my account" then "my phone" and on the right hand side if you scroll down a bit you will see "activate phone." Click on this link and it will take you to "activate your phone online" you will utilize the link for activating "existing or replacement equipment" click on the link that says "activate equipment" (not activate new phone as this would be for a new phone with a new phone number) and follow the prompts (inputting esn number which is located underneath the cell phone battery, etc.).
It's easy, it's simple and it's completely free. And it's instant. I'm not sure why one of the other answers told you it could take up to 24 hours when calling it in as it doesn't, even calling it in is done within 5 minutes or less not 24 hours. But doing the whole thing on the internet including utilizing the backup assistant will save you a lot of time and headache and possibly some cash. I've used both backup assistant (still using it) as well as activating a phone online. I have been told by the Verizon customer support that if you call them they can charge you a $25 activation fee that is why they direct people to do it online via your account. And like I said, if you just log into your account once a month or so the backup assistant will be free of charge.
Hope this helps and good luck!

The above advice won't work on Verizon as their CDMA phones don't use a interchangeable sim card like GSM phone systems use.
You would have to go to a Verizon store. They'll transfer the number and your address book for a small fee. If you've been a subscriber for a while, ask them if they'll waive the transfer fee. They've done it for free for me and my family for the last several phones we've gotten. Some of them were hand me downs from friends and family as well.

first open up your friends phone and take out the battery. then call verizon. tell them what you want to do. they will ask you for your info (easy questions). they will also ask you for the esn of your friends phone. it is labeled esn and its behind where the battery used to be. give them that and they will guide you through the rest. its real easy. it also saves you $10 as opposed to having to go to the store. the only thing is that you wont have all your old contacts. if they both have bluetooth, you can transfer them that way, if not just do it by manually.

Just remove your SIM card and insert it in the other phone. You'll be good to go. If you don't know, the SIM card is located in the battery compartment of the phone. Try to NOT touch the gold contacts with your fingers as well.(oil from skin can impair the connection of the SIM card)

yeah most companies you just have to switch the sim but for CDMA you need to switch the serial # on your account. not sure if it can be done over the phone. maybe check the FAQ's on their website.

You can just switch SIM cards. But it might not work depending on which phone it is. for example, the blackberry is high on security, so it does not allow "foreign" SIM cards on it, other than the one bought with it.
