I took it to the vet and it cost like 200 dollars. I don't have much money as it is. Was this dumb or what?

I can empathize with you. If you feel dumb then your in good company. I once spent $85 to put down a chicken.... I eat at McDonald's for heaven's sake! LOL But she was a pet and now I know better. I just can't have chickens unless I can put 'em down myself (which I can't).

You have to be sensible as well as loving. You have to put food on the table and pay bills. Does that mean you can't have a pet rabbit? No. I would suggest educating your self, though. Read good books so the next time around you will be better able to prevent any illness or at least have a good idea of what the trouble is.

Most rabbit exhibitors know their stuff and are able to diagnose and treat common illnesses themselves. You can do the same. They purchase meds and supplies from their local feed store or online and take care of things for relatively little money (in comparison to going to the vet for everything). They still have their vets but education and prevention is the key to keeping pet rabbit costs reasonable.

A good source for reliable information is the ARBA, of course. KW Cages has some terrific medical books. I recommend "Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits" by Bob Bennett. The author helped write the modern rabbit veterinary books. You can find it at Border's bookstores or on Amazon. You'll love it.

Another good book is the ARBA's "Raising Better Rabbits" book. It comes free with ARBA membership (no, you don't have to raise rabbits to join) as well as a free subscription to Domestic Rabbits magazine. The magazine alone is well worth the cost of membership for all the great articles in it.

You didn't say whether or not your rabbit made it. I sincerely hope it did. Best wishes.

Well it's your bunny. That makes it family. If it had been hopeless or extremely painful for bunny to be saved then maybe it's better to let go, but at $200...that's actually a pretty cheap vet visit if surgery was involved. No, you're not silly. It sounds to me like you're very kind. I spent four times as much trying to save my puppy from parvo and I didn't have much money either. He didn't make it and I still don't regret it.

no! You chose the pet, the pet didnt choose you. When you choose a pet, you choose the responsibility that comes with that animal. I know all about vet fees for rabbits. I run a rescue for them and have seen bills as high as 800 and the bunny still died. You did a good deed first off by even taking the bunny to the vet. If you feel you arent capable of providing proper medical treatment, please rehome your animal

No, it wasn't dumb. A life is more precious than money.

I took my $5 quail to the vet, they made me sit there for an hour waiting, then they told me a bunch of stuff I already knew and sent me home with nothing! It cost me $50 for wasting my time, but it wasn't stupid because at least I tried to see if they could do anything and my quail's life is more important than $50.

No, I think it was the right thing to do. I would have paid $200 to save your bunny.

No thats not stupid. Youe wallet may be tight but you followed your heart. Many people care deeply about their pets. When I was a little kid my parents spent about $1,500 on one of our cats after he got hurt. We had a choice of save the kitty and give up our christmas presents or put him down and spent the holidays without our beloved pet. the whole family picked saving the cat. He survived and lived for nearly 20 years.
