An IBM PC compatible computer, a short-hand way of designating, especially during the period 1981–1997, a computer generally similar to the original IBM PC, XT and AT. Such computers used to be referred to as PC clones, or IBM clones since they almost exactly duplicated all the significant features of the PC, XT or AT internal design. This was due to the ability to legally reverse engineer the BIOS through cleanroom design. Columbia Data Products who built the first clone of an IBM computer through a clean room implementation of its BIOS.

IBM-compatible is a historical term since IBM no longer manufactures personal computers.

Descendants of the IBM PC compatibles make up the majority of microcomputers on the market today, although interoperability with the bus structure and peripherals of the original PC, XT or AT may be non-existent.

The 2 main computer technology sold to the consumer are Apple and IBM compatible.

The term IBM compatible is seldom used as was stated in a previous answer.

If you purchased a PC it is likely IBM compatible.

If you purchased an Apple, it is not IBM compatible, but the newer Apples use the same Intel technology.

Good Luck.
