There are 640 acres in a square mile. That corresponds to an acre being a furlong (220 yards or 1/8th mile) times 22 yards (or 1/80th mile) = 4840 sq yds.

Unfortunately that means that to have a SQUARE lot of 1 acre, you'd need to have sides of 1/sqrt (640) of a mile, that is 1/25.298... of a mile, which isn't an even number of yards.

It would be a square of 69.570... yds length in both directions, or 98.387... yds "across," if by "across" you meant the length of the diagonal to this "square acre."

Live long and prosper.

An acre is 43,560 feet^2. To convert this to square yards, divide by 9. Then take the square root. It should be about 69 yards across.
