No way.
They can be a playoff team, the 7th or 8th seed why not, but going all the way is impossible. Kobe cannot do it alone. Maybe if Kidd and Jermaine O'Neal come aboard then they have the chance.

I am a big Lakers fan and as hope springs eternal, I will grant that it is not impossible. But what would it take ?
1) Kobe needs to grow up do the right thing play team ball day in and day out early in the season or the team will not jel, and develop chemistry.
2) Bynum needs to develop, Kwame really is OK you just can not expect to much and he may not improve much. He has bad hands, hurts his ability to rebound in traffic and to make clean catches in the post once he puts the ball away he shoots a good percentage and Bynum needs to be better than Kwame this year.
3) Walton is not really a go to guy, in fact he would be a great 7th man but the Lakers need him to be solid starter, if he is to do that he must become a better perimeter shooter, he has it in him, but.
4) The Lakers must use Ronny Turief early, he may give them a four man rotation in the post but is still unproven but I think has plenty of upside. If he played 28 min per game he might avg 10 ppg, 7 rpg and hit over 52% of his FG attempts, with Kwame, Mihm and Bynum thats a lot of fouls and they can all work the boards offensive and defensive very hard.
5) Fisher and Odom need to stay healthy, and produce.
6) Farmar needs to continue to develop or Fisher will be overworked, unless----
7) Crittonton surprises by backing up the point, I think he should be given a chance to be Kobes back up as well.
8) Evans needs to push Walton in practice and compete with him for minutes by hitting big threes.
9) Radmonovic needs to figure out the system and contribute.
10) team defense needs to improve.
The Lakers need at least 7-8 of these (and Kobe is absolutely neccessary and not the selfish, sullen Kobe but the one of my dreams who recognizes what it really takes to fullfill his destiny, recogonizes his team-mates and what it will take to win without another NBA great) 10 factors to come through in order to compete in the West. Utah and Houston are not likely to be mediocre teams next season, they will both be tough for anyone to beat, so it will be tough no matter what. If they could accomplish the highly improbable and get to the finals and meet the Celtics there, they could beat them at least in our dreams.

Theres not enough room on here to address all the Laker haters so i wont. Yeah they have a shot but they need Dfish to play the way he did during the threepeat. Kwame needs to man up and hit some of the potential MJ saw in him. Luke and Lamar have to score more and raise their stats. Jarvis and J Farmar need to run the point well and Andrew needs to be a consistant scored at the Center. hopefully CMihm will come back and put up some decent numbers. They NEED TO STAY HEALTHY. Hopefully their mitch K will stop being such a shi**y GM and get Kobe some help. Come on Jermain, get yo *** to LA! KOBE 4 MVP in 08'.

I guess that everyone has a shot, but I would bet everything that I own and any future earnings against the Lakers winning the 2008 title. Lakers are lucky that they don't have to battle with Minnesota for the eigth seed this year.

And at which point during this do you wake up in a cold sweat, heart palpitating and realize it will never happen?
Let's see who will make the playoffs: Spurs, Mavericks, Suns, Jazz, Rockets, Hornets, Warriors, and Blazers.
Don't see Lakers making the playoffs at this point, let alone winning the championship.
Sleep tight.

They can beat Phoenix or San Antonio. They just need someone to take out Dallas for them. Dirk might do himself though.

Kobe is too selfish on and off the court. He hurts a team just as much as he helps. He is a great scorer maybe Jordan like in that aspect except not as consistent. But between rape charges, trade demands, and lack of team play wont happen.
