You probably need a current student or faculty id from a college or university.

At my University, students and staff just login to the school website and can buy products through there -- Dell, Macintrash, Adobe, etc -- its all on the web and authenticates you based on your userid.

call your local apple store to find out what you need. sometimes the school can purchase direct from apple.
