Yes, and it doesn't matter if it will stay on or not was not the question. Besides they do make tougher and more durable foil that you can use for insulation.
Foil has great reflective abilities... In this case the radiation, or light rays will be reflected.

It would help a great deal during the times of the year when it is warm. In places like Phoenix, where it is blistering in the summer, people frequently paint their roofs with white paint. However, during the cold months, it might not work well. The energy reflected back by the roof on a cold day might cause the people in the house to turn up the heating system that gets its energy either directly or indirectly from the burning of fossil fuel. Another idea would be to color the asphalt on the street with a white surface that is also reflective.

can not say it will but do know that alot of people use a sprinkler on the roof to help keep it cool. If your roof is shingles don't know if this will help but if it is aluminum sheets like on a trailer or what they are using now a days on homes you can use a sprinkler, i would put one on each side so that it covers the whole roof. However your water bill will go up.
hope this helps

Long ago I lived in a trailer in CA. Some of the long-term residents actually built a structure over their trailer so that the trailer sat in the shade. I don't know why we all don't do it where it is really hot. . .

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, normal aluminum foil is too thin to do you any good. The only natural way is to surround your house with trees.

Maybe it would deflect the sun, but it's not heavy enough to stay on if a strong wind comes along.

try keeping the curtains and blinds closed during the day, this keeps the sun out and it won't get so hot.
