After 35, there is a decline in fertility and an increase in risks for chromosomal abnormalities. But a risk doesn't mean it's going to happen. Lots of women have healthy pregnancies and babies into their 40s.

If you want a baby, I say go for it!! Start taking prenatal vitamins now and learn about how your fertility works...the more you know, the better your chances of it happening sooner.

Good luck Pumpkin!

You are not too old to have a baby. My mom had her last baby at age 42 and he was (and is) a healthy little boy. The risks with having a baby after age 35 is that your chances of having a baby with down syndrome increase. There are a lot of really great books just for women over 35 who want to have babies that you should check into to get all the information you need. Also, this website is a great source for information about pregnancy that I'm sure you will find helpful:

Sorry about all of the horror studies you could have heard so far. Unfortunately your medical professionals have to do not forget you excessive threat considering the fact that of your age. They are obligated to let you know the entire risk. Nevertheless, many older ladies, even older than you give healthful toddlers. My mom was once 41 years historic when she delivered me. I was born 12 days over due and i was 6 lbs 0.5 ouncesand was 18 inches lengthy. Despite the fact that I used to be viewed small I used to be healthy and developed regularly and even went on to stroll at an early age. The only illness I had as a baby was once asthma and i am now 23 years old and 32 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy. I hope my story brings some light into your trouble.

At 37, your risk for a Down Syndrome baby is roughly 1/224 and total risk for significant chromosome abnormalities is 1/127. To put that into prospective however, your chances of having twins are about 1/100.

To compare if you're interested: at age 25 those risks are 1/1250 and 1/476.

I would first start by going to a pre-natal visit with your dr. They can explain the extra tests that they will normally do on women who are pregnant and 35 or older. Many many women your age have perfectly healthy happy babies. There are a few more risks involved once your of "advanced maternal age" (which is what they call it), but you can find out more about the actual risks from your doctor. It's very common these days though for women 35 to even 40 or slightly over to have healthy pregnancies.

No it is just more of a risk. My aunt was 39 when she got pregnant with her third child. It was very rough on her and there she had alot of problems. But at the end, she had a healthy 9 pound baby girl! If you become pregnant just be careful cause it is risky. GOOD LUCK :)

From an opinion standpoint I do not htink you are to old to have a baby. I would suggest going to your Gyn to get checked out for further clarification and a fertility specialist if needed. I know that research has shoen that with age the incidence of birth defects increases, but not to the degree that you should let this hinder your thoughts on having a family. You will be screened for abnormalities ( most women are offered this screening) and additional testing is offered to women over 35. I have heard that the incidence of having multiples goes up for women over 35!

No you're not too old. It all depends on you and if you think you can handle another pregnancy or not. I had my last baby at 37 and it was just as normal as my other pregnancies. He's now a very active 6 year old. I'm so happy I had him, as I can't imagine my life without him in it!

Yes it is risky. Studies still show women once women get in their 30s and above, there is risk for Down Syndrome. Does not mean it is impossible. With the right doctor, one that is able to monitor the process, your preganncy can be healthy. Don't forget to ask for certain test. Aside from the embryonic fluid they can take to check for DS, I recently read in USA Today that couples are having tests sent away for earlier results, although they have not proven to be 100% accurate, but nothing in medicine is guarunteed. Good Luck!
