What is the worst thing that can happen. If he likes it, you have made a nice arrangement. If he doesn't like it, he can help you reorganize the areas. You can't lose.

Bad idea. My friend's wife repainted the kitchen a different color when he was away, knowing he didn't really like the old color. He got back & hated the new color even worse. Was upset he wasn't involved in the decision, even though she was trying to give him a pleasant surprise.
Can you say backfire?
