Turkish forces crossed the border into Iraq to deal with the Kurds. It goes back to the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War One. The Great Powers promised the Kurds a homeland. But, the Turkish government said no. So, Kurds are spread throughout parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. With the destruction of the Ba'ath regime in Baghdad, the way has been opened for the north part of Iraq to become a semi-autonomous area called Kurdistan. If that area expands, it will take in real estate in the other three countries as well. Since Syria is still a regime under the Ba'ath Party, the Kurds might want to exact a little revenge for Baghdad's Ba'athists carrying out a gas attack on them under Saddam Hussein.
The Arabs are both afraid and embarrased by the Kurds. The last leader of a Pan-Arabic Empire was Yosef Bin Saladin. Yeah, the same Saladin mentioned in all those Hollwood-produced movies about the Crusades. Trouble is that Saladin was a Kurd! And his DNA is out there somewhere in the Kurdish population. The Persians in Iran fear the Kurds because they are the real challenger to Tehran's plans of rebuilding the Persian Empire.
The Kurds are Muslims. But, they aren't Arabs and they aren't Persians. They are the joker in the deck in that part of the Middle East the way the Palestinians are in the areas west of them. And, if the Kurds decide to "lock and load" it could be very interesting indeed.

Well, they serve under the command of Ahmadinejad and the extremist mullahs, so insanity definitely plays a role. Ahmadinejad is a blowhard holocaust denier with a major Napoleon complex, so it doesn't surprise me if true. I would think that any Iranian artillery shelling northern Iraq would be dealt with rather swiftly.
