It seems like either I was naive when I was a teen (10 years ago) and this was always happening, or this is some sort of new thing that kids are doing. Why are they doing it?

Ok so I didn't mean that people NEVER did it before, but I've been a high school teacher for six years now, and when I started, this was not very common. Nowadays, I hear the counselors and students talk about it constantly. It seems like such a strange thing to become a trend.

I wouldn't exactly call it a trend, but I've heard a lot of it on here. It's more a psychological aberration or a cry for attention. But no matter what prompts that type of mutilation, it is a terrible thing. Troubled teens should be seen by a psychiatrist, and parents should be aware of what their kids are doing to themselves. It's bad enough they're into tattooing and body piercing, dyeing their hair weird colors, etc., but cutting is going too far over the edge, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just another naive former teen......(I hesitate to say how many years ago that was)..

I'd have to say it isn't new, but its become more common...
I've had friends who've done it, some claimed boredom (which i found ridiculously stupid, but these are the kids who went on to do pot...), emotional pain which led them to do it, because physical pain was more prevalent and took their mind off it, actually most who did it claimed that reason...Another reason is something's going on in their life that they can't handle, and they feel its an escape, or do it because if someone sees it they may get them help in some form, be it a shrink or a school guidance counselor, etc.

It isn't new. They seem to have different reasons for doing it. Psychologists say it's a way for them to feel in control of something or to remove themselves from a situation or problem. There are alot of posers today who just do it because they think it's cool. The actual ones used to hide it and it was more of a need for them than a show for fun.

No, it's not that new. It's been happening, but now more and more are doing it. It's because they can't get over the fact that they were dealt a bad hand in life, either that or they are way too dramatic and attention seeking. Or it could be the simple fact that "their life sucks!1!1!"

It's nothing new but kids are trying to make it trendy nowadays. With their superficial cuts. I use to cut back in the day(when it wasn't trendy), it's retarded.

No, it's not new. It has been around, in one form or another, as long as there have been teens.

this isn't a new thing, where have you been? As for the why they do it, several reasons. For attention, a cry for help, mental illness.

Eww no! If all of us teens were cutting ourselves, idk, i guess it would be the end of the world! LOL! But no, not all teens are 'emo' if that's what you're getting at. Emo teens cut themselves because they're miserable and want more out of their lives. They're so EMOtional that they cut themselves! So I find it embarrassing that adults think that all teens are emo! JEEZ! no offense, of course!
