Samuel is a good, solid name. No one will ever spell it wrong or pronounce it wrong. OTOH, there may be six other Sams in his kindergarten class.
The important thing is that you two compromise. There are a lot of names out there, and you'll both have to live with them for a long time (-:. Name-calling is not going to get you a great name. Keep an open mind.
I agree with you that "Skylar" (or even worse, from the spelling viewpoint, "Schuyler") isn't a good name for a kid unless maybe it's a family name. It might make a good middle name, though. Samuel Schuyler Sacks. I like that!
Also, be sure to think about it from the kid's perspective. Are the famous people named "XYZ" generally good people and good role models? When the kid looks it up in a name book, will it have a cool meaning? Is it really long, or hard to spell?
I think you're just going to have to keep tossing names out, and one of these times, a name is going to resonate with both of you. Keep the debate friendly, and don't use really negative terms like "horrible" or "you're a hippie!" Sometimes you need to hear a name a few times before you start to like it.
Good luck! (BTW, if we were going to have a boy, we were going to name it "Kaoru Thomas". My husband hated "Michael" and I hated names like "Tetsuya." Good thing we had girls! We agreed more readily on those.)

Samuel or Sam is a fine name. It's also a little hippie-ish, since the hippies were among the first to start re-using some of the old-fashioned and Biblical names. ;-)
I agree with you about Skylar and things like that, but I'm not the one carrying your child, so I think maybe the two of you need to come to some sort of agreement. I'm sure there has to be something between the two extremes that you can both agree on.
A friend of mine and her husband started by taking the top 1000 names list of the previous year (available at http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ ) and going over it separately, marking ones each liked. From that beginning, they were able to come to an agreement.

I think Samuel is a good strong name. Its also very versitle he can be Sammy Sam or Samuel. Just be aware there might be alot of Samuels his age, which alot of children don't like. The name Skylar is not a good name... It's not very versitile and he will probably cop alot of ridicule with this name throughout his life.
Perhaps you can convince your wife to name him an unusual name with a common nickname so he can choose for himself later.
I think there is a perfect name out there that you can both agree on. Just remember that you are not the one who has to live with this for a name day in day out. Asking other people's opinions and watching their reactions is a good way of choosing a name that won't be too outlandish.

Samuel may not sound unique but maybe she should look into the meaning. What I found is in the link below.
It is understandable she does not want her son to be "lame " in a world where everyone tries to outdo the next.
Think of samuel as a wondefull classic name that when people here that name they will feel a "homey feel" Good Luck ..

I love Samuel. I agree with you, I don't care for the new age names at all. They sound very week and just not masculine and strong. Maybe something like Samson which is kinda modern sounding but is still a classic ?

I never really thought I would like it, but it is growing on me. Actually it is becoming a common name again. I know a little Samuel and no other name would fit him. I also know others that will use that name. I would keep looking if you want a traditional name that is not trendy because Samuel is on its way back.........
Maybe some you might like traditional but a little less common....Just thoughts!

I think Samuel is a very good name. But if you & your wife can't agree on a name you could always go to www.behindthename.com and look at a whole bunch of different names and it even tells you what they mean and where they came from. Hope it helps

I think that Samuel is a good name, if anything, see if your wife will agree for it to be a middle name.
