Im a 32yrs young African-American male. I was born and raised on an airforce base and both of my parents are still together. I was educated in private schooling all the way from elementary to university. I have no crminal background, I don't sleep around, I dont have any kids. I love Indie Rock music (Sloan my favorite band). Im pursuing my acting career. I speak with correct and proper English but yet it doesnt seem to matter. My own people will say I'm "acting white" and yet non-blacks will say.."wow your different". Which infuriates me. As if im some kind of genetically mutated lab rat. Do I really live in an adolescent society or am I considered crazy for not bowing to these sterotypes? So actually I have about two questions there. Can someone elaborate? Sorry if the first part sounded like a persoanls ad.

What exactly is acting black? the problem is, we are limiting ourselves to these stereotypes that we as black ppl set up for one another. It is because we are going above and beyond the stereotype, that some (not most) african americans are having a negative outlook. i am a 19 yr old african american ( Nigerian to be exact), and I am currently going to a private University, where there arent many african americans (www.baylor.edu). I live in a really nice neighborhood with a limited number of black ppl, and tend to talk a liitle more proper than ppl of my own race as well, but the thing is, i remain true to myself. Everybody may not have been brought up in the same environment, but its what you make of it that makes you who you are. Dont worry about those haters who are mad at the man you have become. Do you and them do them.

Because of society. Here in America the white society rules even if you are in a predominately black neighborhood, whites still control. They have the government, media, and almost every big business in America with any substance.

White America influences alot of what blacks and other races perceive as the average black male or female which is usually in a negative light.

My parents are still together as well, for 25yrs, both college graduates and successful. I'm currently attending college to become a Family Practitioner. You shouldn't care what other people think of you only what you know for yourself to be true. I never believe(everything) that is being told through the white media or government because it is usually false, but sometimes it is informative.

Yeah I pretty much go through the same thing because of how I talk, dress, and my parents are still together. It's like If I'm not jammin to Tupac or if I wear an aeropostale shirt they're quick to call me a "white girl" and I'm just acting and dressing how I want. From a black point of view or a white point of view, both are wrong to criticize. Just be who you are and love it.

Well, first I'd like to tell you that it's not true that "most blacks" feel the way you have described. Yes, it is true that some blacks and some non-blacks will view you as being different, but that is because America is obsessed with race. American culture is hypocritical in telling us that we live in a "melting pot", but yet we are supposed to have these sub-cultures in America that must act this way or that way to fit the norm.

You 'profess' your black pride, but in the same sense you want to profess your literacy and education as a means to be accepted. There are many white people who will ONLY see the color of your skin; there isn't anything you can do about that. They will tear any amount of self-esteem you have. It is out of fear and inferiority that they do such horrid things.

As far as black people saying you act white?.... I have never heard anything like that. Be proud of who you are. Who cares what anyone says as long as you know who you are, and you're working hard to achieve your goals.

You are not out of the norm, all the blacks I am friends with are educated, speak well, listen to excellent music that includes some rap soul and everything else. You arent alone. Racists will say whatever they want its just ignorant rantings on.

some white people think that white people that listen to R&B and hip hop are "acting black" too.
There are ignorant people in all cultures. Not all black people think the way you describe, many of us understand that we are all different, have different tastes, and come from different backgrounds.
