A betta will be fine in a tank with a guppy. Bettas are not the bloodthirsty killers that many inexperienced aquarists think they are. The only time bettas fight is when they are with other male bettas. However, they will chase down and severely damage a female that will not spawn with them. BTW, it is pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah.

Cardinal tetras (not as delicate as neons), black neons, white clouds, cherry barbs and a small school of corydoras catfish would do well also.

Smaller tetra's should work well but they are a schooling fish so make sure to buy more than 1.
Also rosie reds are a feeder fish a little big larger than guppies and just as cheap - watch out for disease as feeders are not generally cared for well.

Pleco's are aslo nice and will keep algea down.
Shrimp can also be a nice addition and will clean up uneaten food - good since it will turn toxic.
I would not recommend goldfish because they are a very dirty fish that requires more cleaning than you miught want. A betta should be ok but they are territorial and can lead to problems.

bettas are a NO WAY!!!
They are fighting fish and it will think that the other fish is stealing its habitat.
