I'm not sure giving you brands will help much. All car manufacturers make multiple models. Some models within each manufacturer's line have good gas mileage, some don't. Some look good, some don't. Some are reliable, and some aren't.
In terms of sales, Toyota is the world's best seller.

I did my research on this using Readers Digest. They say the best track record was a Toyota Corolla.
Best gas mileage
Least amount of service in the shop
Look in papers for one or buy them used from Mormon Missions.
Most Mormon Missionaries drive Toyotas and they are well serviced. You can save a buck or two.
Just ask them if there is one for sale. They love to talk!
