I think it should be decriminalized.

The percent of people who use marijuana regularly is enormous and the percent of people who have tried or used it in the past is even larger. Yes, laws should reflect our reality. If it didn't have such a bad rep it wouldn't be a gateway drug.
No one and may I repeat NO ONE has ever died from a marijuana overdose but if you look at the number of deaths caused from cigarettes, alcohol, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter drugs each year they will frighten you.
Yes it does intoxicate you and responsible use is key. By not legalizing it the government can send the message that they don't want people high all the time and by decriminalizing it we as people and organizations can advocate responsible use.
Such as:
Don't drive while under the influence. Hello, the same should go for any intoxicant.
Don't hesitate to say no if after evaluating your mood, atmosphere etc you feel it is not conducive to a pleasant and productive experience.
Adults only.
Resist abuse. If you use so much that you are impairing your personal development that is abuse.
Be respectful of those around you who do not wish to partake.

This can work if more people were simply more responsible about it.

Did God not grow it? Yes. Its a plant that has been growing far longer than any of the governments that prohibit it has been around.. + No aids/cancer patients who smoke it should ever be put in jail. That is so freakin scary that the government has that amount of a lack of compassion for it's ailing citizens. Those poor people! No plant or animals should be illegal. What if they out-lawed birds or something? They probably will someday. I think that no processed plants should be legal(heroin, coke etc...) but Pot should be legal they way it naturally grows, to all individuals, especially the ailing.

In the form it is presently used, no. Too many hazards, no quality control, and we don't need another substance that will impair a person.

However the active ingredient in Cannabis has been shown to be beneficial in treating glaucoma and relieving pain and discomfort for people receiving chemotherapy. It should be possible to extract that ingredient and make it available in a form where it can be easily used by a person needing that treatment.

If it were to be legalized it should be regulated much as tobacco and alcohol are now. And that would also mean it would have to be taxed.

It is a plant, but not all plants are plants that benefit us.

There are approx.100 million people just in the USA that would disagree with you sarah. The alcoholics are so much fun to be around with all the violence and accident related deaths.Hell yes legalize it as it is already being decriminalized for medicinal purposes in many states.I believe the FDA is best for me,yeah right they can't even control all this synthetic poison the drug companies are putting out so you people that are so against legalizing marijuana ask someone who benefits from its properties like aids, cancer, migraine headache, glaucoma, and anorexia patients.I think they would agree with legalization of it as well as any one who respects the rights of others to do with their body what they want as long as it not hurting you.The largest increase of drug activity in teens is prescription drugs,FACT.Keep feeding poison into your body cause between the pills and the alcohol you'll be dead from liver failure soon enough. How can a weed be illegal, kind of silly if you ask me.Something you can just throw in your back yard and grows no chemicals no processing just pick, dry and smoke. The insinuation that people that smoke are retards just goes to show your ignorance and intelligence.Respect others and if you don't like it don't hang around those who do just as i don't hang out with fools drinking alcohol.

If your going to do a drug marijuana is the best choice. You can't OD on it, it's rare to develop an addiction, and it's not a depressive like alcohol is(it makes you happy!). The best plan for the gov't would be to regulate it because people who want to do it are going to do it no matter it's legality.

Yes. Legalize it, take the profit margin away from the gangs, and tax it as far as you can. It is no worse than booze, probably better. As addictive as cigarettes. Let the government make money on it, and use the money for universal health insurance. Two problems solved.

I would say yes. The main reason for this is that it has become impossible to stop the sale of it. Beyond that because we have made it illegal, we have given up any ability to regulate it, i.e. age requirements. Beyond any health benefits that might exist, my opinion is that if it costs more money to try to stop something and fail than it does it allow it in controlled atmosphere then it should be allowed.

I think all drugs should be legal.

Drug enforcement currently squanders a huge chunk of our GNP to protect ourselves from ourselves. Only a small percentage of people taking drugs are currently endangering other people or their property.. The penalties for commiting these types of crimes while on drugs should be severe.

We have created a distrust of authority with our drug laws. Studies have shown that taking away the excitement of flaunting the law coupled with education programs stressing how unhealthy drugs are, would actually reduce drug use while saving hundreds of billions of dollars annually..

Of course it should be legal, it's ridiculous that alcohol is legal and pot is not, definitely the lesser of the two evils.. You shouldn't smoke and drive but, if it's 3 am and you're in your house watching T.V. and you want to smoke a joint, nobody should be able to say anything about it. Have you ever seen two people smoke a joint and get into an arguement ? go out an beat someone up ?? LIKE "NO" ! To my surprise my father (YEARS AGO) said that there were medical benefits from pot (much to my surprise), he said it was helpful in reducing "Nausea" in cancer patients recieving treatment, this was back in the 70's, my dad was an "M.D." !

Yes!
I don't care if it's the most addicting substance on the planet [Which it is not, it is far less addicting than alcohol or nicotine, which are perfectly legal. In fact, marijuana isn't even physically addictive.]
Even if it poses a potential threat to the user [Which it doesn't really, studies have proven that it is less likely to give you lung cancer than tobacco, and that it doesn't kill brain cells.]
Marijuana is EXTREMELY safe.
But my point is, IF PEOPLE ARE NOT FREE TO MAKE WRONG, IRRESPONSIBLE CHOICES, THEY ARE NOT FREE AT ALL.
And freedom is a good thing.
=).
