I have a Craftsman garden tractor with a 18.5 V-twin Briggs. It sounds like its running at full throttle till I go over some grass, then It will bog down. I figured the govener needed adjusted, but upon inspection I noticed the arm didn't have extra slots like the old briggs L-heads. anyone know what the problem could be?

I just put new hubs, belts and blades on the deck. so I dont think the problem is in the deck.

A motor that big should be able to tackle pretty much anything. The governer should kick in and add extra oomph. How fast are you driving? If its pretty thick tall grass , id slow it down a lil. Could the carb be running a bit rich? Id either adjust the carb or possibly might need cleaning and see how it goes from there.

i HAD a craftsman 18.5 horse riding mower that i sold for that very reason. if it is one of the 3-blade deck models, they did a piss-poor design on this and the airflow under the deck is not sufficient to evacuate all the grass clippings, and all it does is clog up at the discharge hole even with the cover tied up. i got tired of that piece of junk smoking belts every time it clogged up under there, not to mention it being impossible to cut even very short grass without it leaving a mohawk

First, check that the blade is sharp, & set for highest cut.
Second, check that belts are not slipping (with power off).
Don't use mulch setting, let the clippings exit freely.
Put the drive on 1 (lowest gear) for the first cut.
The problem sounds like sheer volume, take it slow.
Do not adjust the governor!

Make sure the tension on the belts is properly adjusted, if they are too loose the pulley will spin at normal speed, but the belt will slip.

My guess is your trying too hard to mow it short. When the grass is tall, set the mower to high set, or one notch above & go over it. Then set it down a notch or two & mow again. We have almost 5 acres, & if it gets away from us...that is the answer. Hope this helps....

Blades need to be sharpened and grass clippings embedded onto the underside of the blade cover plate need to be scraped off.

Is it possible the new blades were put on upside down ? You would be surprised how often this happens ,even at the shop.
