Why are the characters of all these films Chinese?

I was just watching Anna and King, it's suppose to be Tai, but Chow Yung Fat and Bai Ling is Chinese. Also Memoir of a Geisha, the all those girls are also Chinese, but it suppose to Japanese isn't it?

Thank you!!!!! I have been saying the same thing. I mean just because someone is Asian does not mean that all Asians look alike. I mean you can tell the difference in a Japanese person and a Chinese person, and so on. Now not all the time I will admit. I know a Korean man who was born and raised in Korea, one night 2 Asian girls were in the bar he owns and he and I were talking. I said wow those are to very pretty Japanese girls over there. He said they were Korean, I said no you are wrong. I went over and met them and asked them what nationality they were, they were Japanese. So sometimes it is hard to tell. But I think that in movies like Memoirs of a Geisha and The King and I, should use people of that nationality. Just because they are Asian is not a good reason. It would be like using an Englishman to play an American. I think the reason must be that because there are so many Chinese movie starts that they get the roles for anyone who is suppose to be an Asian character even if they are not from the same country and Nationality as the character is. I do have to say that Bai Ling, Lucy Liu and Mechelle Yoeh are some of the best looking women in film.

I know what you mean, it's like as if other people have trouble enough distinguishing between the countries someone comes from and then this comes up.

True I've noticed that, they have most oriental rolls played by Chinese.

Just like they had Zorro(who was a Mexican hero) played by Antonio Banderes.

Angelina Jolie played the role of a mixed(black and white) woman in a recent movie.

I think these roles should represent the real people so they should have the real race of that character be portrayed.

Ignore Ralph.. hez jsut an asss i dont think there is much diffrence in japanese and chinese.. they both belong to same race that is mongoloid and there are only 3 races that is whites blacks and asians and SCIENTIFICALLY speaking there is NO race we are all humans with difference looks who belong to same family
