I am not sure if you like love stories which many of them are but Fern Michael's books are often mysteries, and they usually have animals in them. You also could try Nora Roberts her books are very suspenseful and mysterious. The book Horseplay by Judy Reene Singer is about horses. She also wrote a book called Still life with Elephant. My mom really enjoyed both of those books. They are not mysteries but the are apparently quite funny. My dad likes James Patterson, Dan Brown and John Grisham. I think a lot of them are mysteries and some of them especially John Grisham can be pretty scary. I hope that this helps you some.

Something animal related:
The Jungle Books by Kipling - free online, this is aimed at younger people but, at 45, I still enjoy it immensely. "The Law of the Jungle" is from this book.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - like the above, aimed at children, but again I enjoyed it immensely. I read this for the first time just a few months ago.
Good mysteries: Sherlock Holmes - free online, think of it as CSI:London 1890. Plus, pre-dates automobiles so horses are prominent in many of the stories, and dogs in at least two.

Try Peeps by Scott Westerfeld. It's kind of horror/mystery about modern vampires.
