I have a square bale of hay outside, and it is about 36" long, 18" wide, and 12 " high. I think that is 4 1/2 cubic feet. I guess it weighs about 15 pounds.

Balers are adjustable to make what ever size or weight bale the operator prefers. The small straw bales can vary between 20 and 60 pounds and are usually sold by the ton or fraction of a ton. You need to weigh a few bales and figure an average when you are buying them.

It's been a while, but, I used to buy hay for my bunny years ago. And a bale is a LOT more than you think. I would guess-timate it will cover about 20 square feet or less.

It really depends on how green or wet the straw is. I used to toss them over the fence to feed the cows by myself, so they have to be at least 50# and about 3' long by 18" high.
