How is Oakland?

Question

I'm going to school in the bay area and my housing is in Oakland (by Claremont and College Avenue)...just want to ask if Oakland is really a dangeroes place...should i carry a taser with me? And is the rule about not wearing blue or red shirt true??? What do people wear in Oakland in August/September, like in San Fran???

since oakland's a really big city, square-mile wise, how safe it is depends on what part you're in. the area known as east oakland is the least safe, followed close behind by west oakland around the BART station area. but claremont and college is actually one of the safer--and more interesting!--areas of oakland. yeah, i'd stay away from wearing blatantly red or blue shirts, but i've never gotten into trouble for accidentally doing so, since i don't exactly look like i could be a gang member. ;) anyway, your area is a great one for a student, since there are a couple of grocery stores right nearby as well as some cool cafes for studying. the 51 bus runs right down college, which is great because it's a major line that can take you north into berkeley, south into downtown oakland, and to the BART station. actually, i'm kind of jealous--your neighborhood is a little safer than my berkeley one, and also more fun. :)

my brother lives in Oakland in a very cool, quaint neighborhood and there are some really, really nice neighborhoods- just be careful... there are also some really, really bad ones, too! My daughter says SHE wouldn't take a chance on wearing those colors... red is the bloods and blue is the crips. Wear anything you want- it's really casual, but nobady cares what anybody else wears.
