The meaning of Self-respect is not to do anything to harm ones self. Example, don't overindulge in anything, food, alcohol, etc.
Not to use illegal substances, not to drive while inebriated etc.
Not to indulge in any immoral practices, that can harm oneself or others. To conduct ones life in an ethical manner.

To respect is to admire or think highly of another. To think highly of one's self is the road to arrogance. Arrogance is the road to isolation and loneliness.

Treating one's self with respect is different than self-respect.

In respect, there is a judgment about the actions of others and the actions of the self. If you believe that X is respectful to yourself and you don't do X, you will likely experience guilt. If someone does to you what you consider to be disrespectful, you will likely experience anger.

Respect is the recipe for guilt and anger.

to me, self respect is loving yourself even when its hard, its being your own friend and taking the advise you would give to a friend. its about knowing you personal boundaries and protecting them from those who would do you harm. you have to love yourself before you can truly love others.
