For beginners start out using Playtex SlimFits, they are slender and smaller than normal tampons. Also, let's identify the parts of a tampon. The bigger tube is the applicater and that is the part that goes inside of you. The smaller tube is there to push the tampon inside of you.
First, use your dominant hand and hold the tampon finger-grips with your thumb and middle fingers. Use your free hand to spread apart your lips or labia. Ease the applicater into your vagina aiming it towards your tailbone or the small of your back. The vagina lays flat so going upwards won't do anything. Keep easing the tampon into your vagina until the finger-grips are right outside of your vagina. Once the applicater is in all the way use your pointer finger to push the 2nd tube into the applicater that is already inside of your vagina. Once it is in all the way pull out the applicater and the string will be hanging outside of your body. Just tuck the string into your underwear and you're done (=
If you feel any discomfort or if you're 'aware' of the tampon then you don't have it in right. When inserted correctly you shouldn't feel a thing.
Good Luck!

Did you read the directions that came with them? They shouldn't hurt. If they do, it is because you aren't putting them in correctly.
How to insert a tampon: (from http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/azhealthtopics/ht/How_Insert_Tamp.htm)
"Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder.
The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort.
Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps.
Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed.
Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube.
Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body.
Use your other hand to open your vagina.
Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina.
Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube.
With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely.
Gently pull the two tubes out together.
Dispose of the applicator according to the manufactuer's instructions.
When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawl strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet.
Tips:
Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon with a water-based lubricant such as K-Y Jelly can make insertion easier the first few times. Don't use petroleum jelly.
Always read the manufactuer's instructions throughly before using any type of tampon.
If the tampon feels uncomfortable it is probably not inserted far enough into your vagina. Try again with a new tampon."

it shouldn't hurt. Since you're new to this, you probably don't know where to put it. use a mirror if you have to and pull both legs on both sides as far as your can. You'll see a large hole in the middle. (i know this sounds stupid, sorry). That's where it goes. you push the tampon up. don't worry, you won't poke into any weird organs, i promise, there's nothing there but muscle, it can't get lost in there either because at the end there is a wall and the cervix (where the baby comes out, but it's really small, the tampon can never go in there). here is another one, but you probably won't do it because it's a little weird and scary. You can feel through the front while touching the wall, when you reach where you're suppose the put it, you'll know, you can slide a whole finger in there. it might take you a few tries. but when it's in, and you can't feel it, and you can walk normally, you got it right, i it feels like it's hanging around... try again. good luck. you'll be able to do it the first few tries if you don't freak out

I hate pads too...and just finished my period too. Not sure what number....but more than 3 lol.
Lots of good advise here...
But you said you tried to put it in and it hurt....are you on your period now? If you are trying to put a tampon in when you are dry it will hurt.
It will also hurt if you take it dry too...
Good luck, and it gets lots easier

The package should come with instructions, but if not then basically just hold the end with the string, point other end upward so it's vertical, and stick it in there. It's uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it. Change your tampon at least every two or three hours.
