I had an older dog who was never the same after the death of my younger dog, even after I got a new dog to keep her company.
I had a horse that dropped 200lb after the death of her stablemate.
Grief? What else could it be? Animals are sentinent creatures, after all!

I know a man who had 2 dogs that roamed together at night. He would open the fence gate to let them run, but had no idea where they went.
His home is about 1/2 mile from the interstate.
One evening, the dog Lady came home alone and made the guy go back out with her.
He knew something was wrong because the 2 dogs were inseparable.
Anyway, Lady led the man to the interstate and to where the dead dog lay by the side of the road.
To make the story shorter: Lady grieved for her friend at least a year, and then she died too.
I've known the man who owned both dogs for 26 years.
It was just really sad watching the dog, how it grieved, after it's companion died.

Yes, on the Animal Planet they showed this mom monkey and her baby just died, and everyday for 9 days she went to go see if her son woke up yet. It was so sad!
Take care and stay cool,
