Before actually dropping the tank, check the wiring into the sender for corrosion or breakage and repair if necessary. An easier job than actually dropping the tank, and you'll be thankful if that is the problem.

It will also have a couple of codes stored in the PCM as it monitors this for emissions reasons. Normally what is wrong is the level sensor that is attached to the fuel sender assembly inside the tank is faulty. All it is is a resistor board with a float on it that moves with the fuel level. You can't fix it, you can only replace it. This involves removing the fuel tank assembly completely and is a ***** to do. You can check to be sure you don't have an open circuit to the tank as this makes it behave about the same. Just unplug the tank connector and ground the fuel level wire and see how the gas guage reacts. If the circuit is good, it will make the gas guage go to empty. There usually is a timer circuit built in to prevent sloshing affects. Good luck.

Have 99' with the same problem. Guessing as stated on other answers that it is the pump assembly and float. If you know your average mileage per tank, use the trip to know when you need to fuel. Allowing the tank to run empty, and below 1/4 tank will burn out the fuel pump. The pump is kept cool by the gas covering it.

Did you alter out the pump/gauge/filter out? if so, did you flush the completed tank? additionally, replaced into it ever intermittently out, or has it continuously been pegged low? Any modifications that happened around the comparable time? GM gasoline gauges have a great sort of problems, one in all it particularly is geared up up "crud" on the sending unit. it may take place with few miles, or after a protracted time. I even have it on the two my Vette and my Suburban, I frequently merely run some gasoline purifier by using my tank and it is going away for a mutually as.

Sounds like you need to drop the fuel tank and replace the sending unit/pump assembly. It will probably take care of both concerns.
Good luck!
