Recently a girl overdosed on caffeine and had to be hospitalized (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/health/dietfitness.html?in_article_id=475021&in_page_id=1774&ICO=HEALTH&ICL=TOPART)
it is obvious that caffeine is a dangerous and harmful drug with a high potential of abuse and no known medical use. it should be outlawed just like pot. it is a danger to our us all and will eventually cause the downfall of society.

Tea has been consumed in China for thousands of years. However, the first documented case of caffeine consumption for its stimulating effects was done in the 15th century by Sufis of Yemen to aid concentration during evening prayer. By the 16th century coffee houses were established in Cairo, Istanbul, and Mecca. Coffee houses expanded into Europe in the 17th century and thus became a worldwide phenomena. Today the strongest caffeinated beverages are available in Japan. The first near pure extraction and isolation of caffeine was done in 1819 by German chemist Friedrich Ferdinand Runge. According to German legend it was instigated by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Today there are over six thousand Starbucks worldwide!
Caffeine is now regarded as one of the most popular and best legal highs.
Caffeine gives a powerful stimulating effect making you feel awake, uplifted and ready for anything. It can have a significant positive effect on your performance and mobilises fatty acids from your fat stores so they are burned by your body. It is the most widely used drug in the world and taking it pure makes it more effective.

I disagree fully, 100%. You have to figure in WHAT the caffine came from, its source, you cant just drink 20 pepsis and end up in the hospital. Pot is a whole other topic, but since you mentioned it, all I will say is what about Alcohol? There has been (and reported) more deaths & accidents involving Alcohol THAN ANY OTHER DRUG!!! Caffine will cause the downfall of Society? No, Idiots will do that.

Caffeine is definitely a strong stimulant, but some people are more sensitive than others. I know that I am sensitive to it, so I make sure to limit it. My mother drinks the strongest coffee anyone can make with little if any effect. I don't think it should be outlawed, but all ingredients should be clearly listed so that anyone can make intelligent decisions about what they wish to consume.

Water can also kill you if you drink enough. Moderation is the key to anything that you put in your body. It sounds like a rare occurrence that someone would die from caffeine. This is the first incident that I've heard about. I'm sure that it has happened before but not enough to ban it. I haven't seen anyone ban water. I think that your claim of it to "eventually cause the downfall of society" sounds very irrational since it comes naturally in many foods. The only organization that I have ever heard to ban it are the Mormons but I'm sure their idea of "hot drinks" is taken out of context.

Wow. A girl was hospitalised cause she was stupid and drank too much coffee. Let's ban it because one person was an idiot.
Look at how many people are hospitalised because of cars. Let's ban them.
And alcohol. Ban that too.
Lots of people are killed in fires. Let's ban fire.
Caffeine is NOWHERE EVEN CLOSE as harmful as nicoteine or alcohol. There are plenty of medical uses for caffeine, mostly to keep people alert - but it is shown that it reduces the risk of parkinson's disease. Banning caffeine is utterly and completely ridiculous. Alcohol does incredible damage to people's health, and is damaging to society in far more obvious ways - yet you're not talking about banning that.
But assuming your ridiculous and reactionary laws were enacted and all caffeine containing substances were banned. People still want coffee, and they certainly still want chocolate, but it's illegal to own make or sell it. So they buy it from criminals. These criminals cut their chocolate with heroin to make more people buy it as they're also addicted to heroin. You now have a nation addicted to both illicite caffeine and now heroin. Caffeine would certainly not be difficult to smuggle into the country, as it's legal in every other country on Earth. You have millions wasted on a law nobody (except of course extremists such as yourself) wants, which is unenforcable, which contributes nothing to society and which is an utter waste of police time.
And personally I advocate the legalisation of cannabis - far better to regulate it than to try to pretend that by banning it it's going to go away.

Oh please,no one forces you too drink it,true it is addicting like cigs. but when most of us started we didn't know about the addiction. And you stated it has no medical use, well just last wk.on GMA "coffee is good for the memory especially in women" so like everything else one day it's no good for you.next day it does wonders. I enjoy my coffee and if I don't have it I get caffeine withdrawal As far as outlawing it there's too much $$ being made on our addictions. So I suggest you go on a different crusade.......I LOVE MY COFFEE.!

3 times the recommended DAILY does in 4 hours. That is 18 times the recommended rate. Name something that is NOT lethal at that rate. I just heard a study that claims caffeine reduces the risk of some kinds of cancer. Even if it is a health hazard, let ME decide to risk my own life.

High potential of abuse ???????????? That`s odd .......... no one I know drinks 5 pots of coffee before going out in the morning .
I`m not aware of anyone that sticks up the corner grocery store so they can get a pound of coffee to see them through for a few hours .
I`m also not aware of anyone that plans their entire day around a cup of coffee , or anyone that`s been committed to an insane asylum because of years of coffee "addiction" .
Do you know anyone who`s brain has been totally FRIED from too much coffee ?????

I'm of the opinion that most things, in moderation, are fine. Most, not all. I think having caffiene in it's natural doses is fine, it's when you start abusing the amounts allowed by normal consumption levels that you get in real trouble. I mean, drinking a cup of tea every day is fine, caffiene pills are NOT.
Addiction to anything is difficult to overcome. If you can get it abolished, good luck to you... I'll let you be the one to break it to the public. It'll work just like prohibition did.
