My mom and dad own my Great Grandfathers house. It is in bad repair, and will be sold if possible. I am staying at my Gradmothers house for the week, and wanted to clean out the top floor (only two bedrooms), so I can go up there and get away from the world for a while.

The thing is, before my mom and dad got the house, my Grandmother rented it to a family. They had alot of pets, and never cleaned up the place after the pets. So, it kinda smells. It has been cleaned out and stuff, but if is very, how to say it, I guess, the air is thick, and still has that faint smell of animal. Is there a way to clean up the top floor so I don't have to smell it, or smell like it? There isn't any furniture, it was all taken out.

Hope worded it okay.

I like the sugestions, but I thought I would add a couple details and questions.

Would Pinesol, or Clorox with water work? That would get rid of germs and take away the smell, right?

I don't want to get carried away becasue I'm only here for a week, and the house will probably be sold the next time I go up to my Grandmothers house. So, just getting rid of the smell is good enough for me right now.

Animal smells can be hard to get rid of. Fortunately the rooms are empty so you should be able to work with that.

Use a lot of vinegar and baking soda: Both of those are good deodorizers, especially where animal smells are concerned. And you can even try using Febreze and just plain opening the windows to let the place air.

One thing that might help is painting the walls with a sealant such as Kilz, then repainting the rooms.

Good luck!

OK you want to get rid of the odors of animals right: Take a few bowls and fill them with white vinegar, and place them in different parts of the room. This will remove odors as vinegar is an odor eater. Now vacuum, dust, and wash floors clean everything there. Get yourself a compfy chair and whatever you need and enjoy your free time away from all.

Try using Spray Nine cleaner/degreaser/disinfectant. It is a great stain remover, controls odor, & it disinfects too!
