First check with your colleges as to what they support. If they support both - check to see if they offer discounts on both - they often do. Sometimes the college bookstore costs more but has more software and includes service. If you haven't decided on school yet, I would hold off until you do. Some colleges have laptop programs where they give you a laptop. If you must buy now.....Apples are overall better in terms of up time and lack of viruses however every accessory will cost you more than a PC. Wait if you can thought...what you bring to college is most likely what you will have for the next 4 years - ALSO, get some sort of security for it - either a STOP security plate or Computrace...it will be money well spent.

Splurge, buy a MacBook for $999 at the Apple education store. Add iWorks for $80 and you can open and save in "Office" type documents. You can even do spreadsheets and PowerPoint (Macs use Keynote which will open and present PowerPoint shows). You'll already have iWorks 08 which is iTunes, iPhoto, iDvd, iMovie, Safari, Garage Band and more. And you won't need an anti virus program and have less stress. The daily time you would spend downloading virus definitions and scanning your hard drive, can be used to do your school work.

Macs are WAY better than windows!!! They have fewer viruses, they're easier to use, excellent design, and they have great software! You should be able to buy on that is newer so it isn't childish looking. GET A MAC!!!! They're AWESOME!

BTW, if you buy one new at an apple store, you can get a free ipod!

Programming is easier with a PC than a MAC. PC software easier to get than a MAC. For equal number crunching speed a MAC is costly than a PC.

if you want a good, but expensive laptop go with apple because they are pretty good in terms of presentations and security. they are basically bullet-proof. unfortunately, if it breaks, only apple products can be used. windows is ok with presentations with powerpoint and other office programs. the laptops that carry it are cheaper, but can break down and without the necessary security software, can be hacked and infected easily. fortunately it can be reset back to normal really easily with the restore point option and easy to back up files.

the point is if you're gonna need a workhorse for school work, definitely get a windows-based PC. if you're one of those music/movie types, get a mac. if you're getting a pc, get one with a AMD turion 64x2's. and windows xp pro. xp pro is still the best version of windows. as to a mac, i don't think that there's a lotta choices...

if you can, get a new computer. used computers are full of problems. if you want something for photos, presentations, and movies, get a mac. personally i'm a pc fan but a mac might be better for you.
