Pirate outfit essentials?

Ok, I'm looking to put together a pirate outfit. The problem is that a lot of the costumes online are either more expensive than i can afford or totally not what im looking for. So, I would appreciate any suggestions on places to look and what i should be looking for. I want it to look more authenic and unique than the store bought ones :) thanks

First look at pictures of pirates. Or even watch the pirates of the caribbean films. A lot of research went into the costumes on that film. And they did a pretty acurate portrail.

What are you looking for? And how much are you willing to spend? Will you be a female pirate or a male pirate? Remember that the few infamous female pirates were pretending to be male as it was often considered bad luck to have a woman on ship. So you wouldn't want a one of those "sexy" female pirate costumes you see.

Pirates often wore what they stole and tried to create a image for themselves. Usually an image of power. They wanted to appear threatning and powerful.

I would say stay away for the eye patches, the big gold hoop ear ring and the hook. Although, there were, no doubt, pirates that wore these things. They've all become cliche.

Go cheap on the weapons as that would be most expensive. buycostoms.com have some cool looking pistols and swords.

Look for cheapy vintage clothes on ebay or in thrift stores like Goodwill. You'll need pants in darker colors. In hard wearing fabrics. I suggest getting used clothing because you'll want to make them appear dirty and rugged. Pirates were nasty. They'd wash their clothes in urine to get rid of blood stains. They'd cake on tar on their pants for water resistance.

Soak your clothes in tea or coffee to stain them. Throw some mud on them.

You'll need a puffy sleeved shirt. Or just a oversized white shirt. The tea and coffee trick works well with this shirt. Use sand paper to kind of scrape at the edges of the shirt and pants too to make it look frayed a bit.

Find some buckles shoes. Or boots. You can buy boot flaps at buycostumes.com if you want that sort of look.

You'll also need a jacket. I've seen some great and expensive ones on ebay. However jackets in this design:

Are quite popular and you can also find tons of them at Goodwill. And would look good with a pirate costume as it looks like something they might steal from a nobleman.

First determine what is your budget.

Next did you try ebay, sometimes you can get them on the cheap.

Essentails:

1) Eye patch.
2) Head scarf.
3) White frill shirt (for head pirates) a stripped on for the crew).
4) Boots with the cuff at the top.
5) A fake sword.
6) Big single gold hoop earing.

Why don't you watch some old pirate movies and steal some of their ideas?
