Within the next twelve months, Bush's handlers will have to come up with a viable excuse for invading Iran (they know 'weapons of mass destruction' won't work again). The most likely scenario is another 'terrorist attack', but this time it would be in the Midwest - perhaps St. Louis or Chicago, so that there's a stronger emotional impact in the heartland than there is when such things happen in large metropolitan areas.
If the Iranian invasion can't happen by the end of next summer, the Bush administration will be ordered to invade just prior to the '08 elections. Bush will be told to declare martial law, claiming that it's not in the best interests of the country to change administrations at that time (his effective elimination of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 gives him more power in "major public emergencies").
Then Iran will be attacked for the very same reasons Iraq was unconstitutionally, illegally, unjustifiably and immorally attacked: OIL and WAR PROFITEERING.
The only possible reason this might unfold is if the GOP foresees a major economic depression on the horizon shortly after Bush leaves office (which is highly likely in 2010). If that's the case, the Republicans will give only a MilqueToast effort at trying to win the '08 elections. They can then blame the depression of the Democrats and come back strong in 2012. At that time, they would then invade Iran so that a handful of wealthy elitists, industrialists and power brokers can become even wealthier and more powerful than they already are. -RKO- 08/19/07

It would be a poor move on America's part and frankly I don't think it's very likely. I cannot see the Republicans trying to justify another war in an election year. I suppose it's vaguely possible that after November of next year, Mr. Bush might do something as a closing chapter on his presidency, but I just don't think he wants the Democrats to control the Presidency and Congress (something that hasn't existed since 1994).

Here's the other thing: the fact is that many--I would even say a majority--of Iranians like America and Americans. There are very close ties and in spite of 25 years of official cold hostility between the USA and Iran, they share a number of interests. I think the carrot approach would yield a lot better results than using the stick.

Damnfool gunboat diplomacy will just get a lot of people killed.

Cheers.

Yes, me too. Cheney's been foaming at the mouth to go into Iran. This article was from last month... I find it pretty scary that Bush and Cheney appear to think that dealing with Iran is something only they can handle:

The Guardian quotes what it calls a "well-placed source in Washington" as saying: "Bush is not going to leave office with Iran still in Limbo." The source also said Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney did not trust any potential successors in the White House, Republican or Democrat, to deal with Iran decisively."

(Given the choice, I'd rather have a 'whore monger' than a 'war monger'... less people die!)

I get the feeling that the USA is trying to set up another country in the middle east again and nothing more than that.

I seriously would have thought that you would have been able to see through Bush's lies after Iraq, but I guess I was wrong and the proverbial leading a horse to water is true.

Iran is just blowing off some steam. Bush can't afford to go after Iran right now, he's already in some hot water by neglecting our country and keeping his focus only on Iraq.

The rest of the world is really getting fed up with the USA, and I think if we did go to war with Iran, we would have to do it alone. Other countries are sick of the words, "You're either with us, or against us".

Way too much 'saber-rattling' by both sides. This has been a long time in the waiting and both sides are using Iraq as the 'excuse' to nip at each other's heels. If it comes to a fight, if we think Iraq is a chaotic mess, imagine what an entire region at war will look like.

I think any topic that the American people hear about in the media has already been in the works for quite awhile, Yes I think Bush will leave another mess in the lap of the next president.

It's hard to see how the U.S. could handle it militarily, with its troops spread out as thinly as they are in Afghanistan and Iraq. Cheney appears to have been pushing for an attack on Iran. If that were to happen, it would be the end of American credibility in the world, and possibly the end of America as a superpower.
