There are ATM's in Italy. Take cash out as you go. LOTS of THIEVES in Europe

If you have a credit card bring it, but do use your debit card to use the ATM, because the card companies often charge you.
Check before traveling what each use will cost you, and if it is more than token money, search or ask for a cheaper system.

Use your credit card for bigger bills like your hotel.
MasterCard and Visa are the most used ones, American Express is not much liked in Europe,
Traveler cheques are not used often any more and cost a lot in use, so that is a no no.

I would definately take at least 100 euro with you in cash for when you first arrive. You never know what to expect. when i was there last year the taxis were all on strike and I had to pay for a private transfer to my hotel which ended up costing me close to 90 euro. they do have atm's everywhere but be careful which atms you use, make sure they are either in a bank or a reputable building. the atm's overseas have been known to eat cards. Do program the telephone number to your bank and credit cards in your phone in case you lose your wallet.

I never exchange money before traveling - I always use cash cards. You can find cash machines everywhere and the exchange rate is better than at exchange offices. I've attached my favorite site for money exchange info.
