If you want a real square root sign and you have
a Windows machine hold down the left ALT key
and type 251 on the number pad.
Holding down the left ALT key and typing
252 on the number pad gives an exponent of n.
Example: Fermat's equation. xⁿ + yⁿ = zⁿ.
The exponent sign is a ^ sign. So 3^4 is 3 to the 4th power.

Within computing, squares and other exponents are commonly created via the ^ symbol (shift+6 on a standard UK keyboard, possibly different on US keyboards). It's standard use is as follows;
a^b
Where a is the base number and the b is the exponent value.
