my boyfriend and i are planning to rent a cabin this winter for a week, go snowboarding and just enjoy a different climate (we live in san diego). i have never been to lake tahoe, mammoth mountain or big bear and i'm wondering which would be best.

don't know about mammouth or big bear, but I lived in South Lake Tahoe for 12 years and even though I no longer live there, it still gets my vote for an awesome vacation! There is, of course, a most awesomely beautiful alpine lake, wonderful ski resorts, the casino night life if you choose or just hanging out in your cozy cabin with a fire, watching the snow fall. Love it there!

I am familiar with all and will echo that Tahoe is best. Mammoth is also good and if you are driving would be several hours closer. Skiing/snowboarding are great both places.
While Big Bear is closest it's just not as nice. Bark beetles have been munching down the pine trees and it looks pretty pathetic in places. Might not look quite as bad with snow covering the dead trees.

I've only been to Big Bear which was amazing! You might want to check out www.bigbearvacations.com. You can rent a cabin for about the same, if not less, then a hotel room. It's not that bad of a drive either. If you don't have a 4x4, be sure to bring chains. If the road is too slippery, they'll check for them. It'll suck to get all the way down there and have to turn around.

You have them in the right order...
Tahoe is by far the best, but furthest and most expensive.
Mammoth is Fantastic!
Big Bear is adequate.
or... if you want closer try Mountain High.

ive been too all of those places many times it depends if you gusy want somewere romantic like get a lil cabin in mamoth or big bear. but if you want some fun like on a boat ro soemthing go to tahoe i love tahoe
