What was the cost? Was there pain?
I can't remember to take the pill, the ring was too uncomfortable, the patch irritates my skin, I travel too much and too erratically to do the depo shots, I've heard horror stories about the rods coming out of peoples' arms, and I don't like the idea of an IUD. My husband and I agree that we do not want children, but he is understandably nervous about the idea of a vasectomy...can anyone describe to me what they went through during and after the essure procedure? Did you have any down time? Did it adversly affect your cycle or mood?

I have the Essure implants. But, I'm also 30 yrs old with 1 child and 2 step children. You may want to wait until you're a little older to go such a permanent route. But, if you choose to use Essure it's a simple day surgery that takes 30 mn. I had no cramping the next day. It's been almost a year since I had it done and I haven't noticed any real side affects. Good luck! Look up www.conceptus.com They are the manufacturers of essure.

I had the procedure done last October and am so glad I did. Ignore the naysayers, just do it but I would recommend getting antibiotics to take just in case. I had a bladder infection a week to the day after my procedure and again a week after my HSG test three months later so if I had it to do again that is the only thing I would do differently. I bled some the first day or so but pain no worse than cramps. The anesthesia was the worst for me but of course it goes away. I had it done on a Thursday, was home that day and Friday but was out running errands on Saturday (in sweats because I did not want anything binding like jeans on my stomach due to cramps) but was back at the gym on Monday and felt great. If you do not have kids most urologists won't do a vasectomy, they would not do one on my husband because we are under 40 with no children and neither of us wanted children and I hated taking the pill. I will say that my PMS got worse getting off the pill but a low dose antidepressant takes care of that, benefits of being off the pill and having Essure done are definitely worth it.

Essure Procedure Cost

I had considered the procedure; however having had a previous uterine perforation because of an IUD, I'm no longer a candidate.

Also, even before finding that out, my research showed that the procedure has an overall failure/complication rate of over 14% (or 70 problems for every 500 users), and there is NO applicable contraceptive data for beyond the 5 year mark.
You also must undergo HSG (uterine dye/x-ray procedure) one or more times to make sure that the tubes are blocked. Until 100% blockage occurs, you MUST use alternate contraception.
As for how it will effect you, your cycles will be whatever they were without hormonal contraceptives...if you use them. If you don't (use barrier methods), then there will be no change. Down time is usually 1 or 2 days, though many people return to their normal activities the next day.

By comparison, vasectomy is a VERY fast, relatively easy out-patient procedure, with a much higher success rate (1 out of 500 men will have some sort of complication).

Just ask him to get the vasectomy. There is nothing to it. I am a complete pain wimp, and it didn’t bother me.
