No, islands are the tops of underwater mountains. The base is at the bottom of the ocean. They may be the result of a volcano, or just an accumulation of coral or the remainder of an ancient mountain around which the sea level rose. Though everything that is in the water has a bouyant force which results from the weight of the water it displaces, islands are not free and do not float.

Do Islands Float

No. Just think of islands as mountains partially submerged by water. That became the case for some islands in Gatun Lake fromed by the Panama Canal. Also, the volcanic activity in Iceland has formed a new island, Surtsey, I think, off of it's coast a few years ago.

the whole world is "floating" actually. All the countries in the world rest on what are called tectonic plates which gradually move or float over 100s ,1000s of years so that the worlds whole geography changes. so when dinosaurs where about the uk was linked to mainland europe. Infact countries are not whole or solid and may be made up of several plates. When a country lies on several plates it means the likelihood of earth quakes and volcanos.

Why the hell do people ask questions that have absolutely nothing to do with hockey in the hockey section??? Islands don't float on water if that's what you mean, neither do continents. Go ask this in the geology section or something. Yeah, lol, conintunts.

no, think of an island as a big hill or mountain in the middle of the sea or ocean. Continents and islands are for the most part*

Think of the ocean and seas as very deep puddles
