The gear shift knob simply unscrews by turning it counter-clockwise. the trick is that you have to squeeze the ring at the bottom of the shift knob in order to separate the shift boot from the knob by pulling the boot down as you are squeezing the ring. there is a retaining pawl inside the ring at the bottom of the knob that locks to boot to the knob.

once you release the pawl and pull the boot down then you can simply twist the gearshift off by turning it counterclockwise.

after you remove the knob you can use a pair of needlenose plyers to squeeze the two tabs that are inside the retaining ring to release the retaining ring from the shift knob. You should transfer that ring to the new shift knob as that is what holds the shift boot in place. then, simply screw the new knob and retainer onto the gearshift lever and re-attach the knob.

hope that helps. if you need a picture, email me separately by clicking on the icon next to my answer and chose email.
