Well Washington was the one who oversaw the making of the constitution. He did not want to be the president over the proceedings but felt he had to go. This is shown in his diary and some of his writings. For further information there is a really good book called "A Brilliant Solution" I forgot who the author is. It is a really good book about the forming of the US constitution and will tell you the role that Ben Franklin, John Hancock and Thomas Jefferson played in it as well as others. The main reason he became president is because he was a well respected man even among his peers. Though not a great general, his leading of American forces and the role he played in the forming of the Constitution were key elements to his becoming president. Some historians even say that if he had not attended the meeting where the constitution was formed that it may have never happened. He was that respected and his words and thoughts were very powerful. He new this to I think to some degree and that is why he went. One could say he was the opposite of the ideas of Machiavelli, he is the one who felt the ends justify the means. This is not the case with Washington. He could have been president for life and refused. He wanted to enjoy his life with his wife and live without all the upheaval of politics but he knew and others new that in order to make the nations stable he would have to be the president.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington says:
The Electoral College elected Washington unanimously in 1789, and again in the 1792 election; he remains the only president to receive 100 percent of electoral votes. As runner-up with 34 votes (each elector cast two votes), John Adams became vice president. Washington took the oath of office as the first President under the Constitution for the United States of America on April 30, 1789 at Federal Hall in New York City although he never wanted the position in the beginning.[18]
The First U.S. Congress voted to pay Washington a salary of $25,000 a year—a large sum in 1789. Washington, already wealthy, declined the salary, since he valued his image as a selfless public servant. At the urging of Congress, however, he ultimately accepted the payment. A dangerous precedent could have been set otherwise, as the founding fathers wanted future presidents to come from a large pool of potential candidates - not just those citizens that could afford to do the work for free.
Washington attended carefully to the pomp and ceremony of office, making sure that the titles and trappings were suitably republican and never emulated European royal courts. To that end, he preferred the title "Mr. President" to the more majestic names suggested.
Washington proved an able administrator. An excellent delegator and judge of talent and character, he held regular cabinet meetings that debated issues; he then made the final decision and moved on. In handling routine tasks, he was "systematic, orderly, energetic, solicitous of the opinion of others but decisive, intent upon general goals and the consistency of particular actions with them."[19]
Washington reluctantly served a second term as president. He refused to run for a third, establishing the customary policy of a maximum of two terms for a president which later became law by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Men came to Philadelphia to meet with the First Continental Congress. Washington thought he would be a good man to be general of the army, so he showed up in a uniform he had designed himself. The men agreed he would be the best person for the job.
The people of America wanted to be free of the rule of England and fought for that freedom.
Washington was a good general. At one time Congress could not pay the soldiers and the soldiers started to rebel. The general spoke to them about the need to keep fighting and he said he himself would accept no pay until the war was won. The soldiers began to cry and there was no talk of mutiny * after that day.
Washington was always trying to become a better person. He worked to learn how to write neatly so people could read his writing easily. To improve his manners, he copied 110 rules or sayings written by a French priest. One of his favorites was: "When walking with a great man, don't walk right beside him, but somewhat behind. Stay close enough that he may speak easily to you."
The people wanted to make him king, but he thought the country needed a different kind of government. They elected him president in 1789. He received a unanimous * vote by the men who were doing the electing. Every one of them voted for him.
He served for two terms; 8 years, as president. The people wanted him to run for a third term, but he said, "No", and went back to the plantation.
He later returned and became Commander in Chief of the Army.
In 1799 he became ill with a sore throat. The doctors in those days did not know how to treat an illness, and some think their treatment caused his death

George Washington is one of the two ever to hold the highest position in the military: Commander of the Armies. He for a while, commanded both Army and the Colonial Navy. He earned his presidency through his works with the military. He had been the only unanimously elected president (100% vote) however, one elector (dont remember name) actually voted against a more recent president so that George Washington would remain with that title.

Washington was the opposite of The Prince, and nothing like Macchiavelli.
He was quite simply, the most popular man in the entire American Revolution. Even though his raggedy and draggle tailed army lost as often as it won, he was loved by his troops. Even though all the rest of the rich powerful silversmiths, planters, printers, etc. involved in the Revolution had reasons to want to be the top man, they all agreed that Washington was the leader.
George Washington was a five-star celebrity, and earned nothing but praise from all the people around him. He had no trouble getting the presidency, it was by acclamation instead of election. He could have been president for life, could have taken a salary, could have had honors to pass down to his children, etc. but he denied all of these things to build more power into the new government instead of himself or his family line.
I wish we had a few people like him today, actually.

The congressional delegates that had just hacked out the constitution, also got into a heated discussion on who should be first president. John Adams who ended up being the 2nd president had pushed for himself to be the first. but the delegates even though they thought John Adams was qualified seen his self campaign as being arrogant and didnt support him. One of the delegates made a speech offering a suggestion for a possible candidate and his speech successfully sold George Washington as more likable candidate for the job. I have forgotton who it was that made this speech
