They choose not to accept change. It's their choice, based on their beliefs and their values.

Maybe not always, but MANY times they are. They are time tested over generations, and not just the "latest thing" or a passing fad. I respect the generations that came before me. They were not perfect and didn't do everything right, but they were smart people (just as smart as us now) and I have a great deal of respect for them and their wisdom. That comes with maturity. When I was younger, there were times when I thought that the older generations or customs were wrong, but as I get older (and wiser) I see the wisdom in it.
eldude....I love your question! It is a very appropriate one.
Lindsay G......yes sometimes traditions can be wrong, but many times they are right. You gave the example of slavery as a tradition. Yes that was wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that many traditions are right. Not ALL traditions are right, but MANY are. I think you do fear traditions. I challenge you to give me a list of traditions that you do like. Prove that you do not fear tradition.

If you make an A in your class and your friend makes a C and your friend complains and moans about not making the grade. Are you willing to sacrifice your A down to a B to give her a B from a C? I wouldn't. I earned it and he/she didn't.
There's nothing wrong with tradition. Hell, there's even change in tradition. It just doesn't occur at such brash and drastic instances.

Mostly it's because of the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
In other words, people stick with a lot of traditions because they realize that things are pretty good in that area, and they don't see a reason to mess with something that's pretty good. Instead, I support change ONLY in those areas where things are NOT working well.
That sounds pretty sensible to me. Why do YOU want change for change's sake?

Racism/Slavery was a choice, do we continue to practice slavery?
Traditional values such as family, church, and caring for the unborn were all good Traditions, and we must continue them!!!
Which do you choose?
Life or no life!!
Which do you choose?
Civil society or no Civil society, must we tolerate all kinds of twisted behavior in society?????
'Choose ye this day whom ye shall serve, as for me and my house, WE will serve the Lord.'

Can you do a roll reversal and ask yourself why people fear tradition?
Tradition that proves itself to be beneficial will be supported longer and also create more support for it. I think it makes sense.

All recent changes are draconian laws about life and how you live it. We need a thousand less laws, and let people out of prison. We put more people in prison than any other country. Our ways are beyond quaint, they are stupid.!
