I keep reading instructions for spiraling and it says something like: work 10 single crochets in the ring (this much I get) and then for the next round it says work 2 single crochets in each of the first nine stitches. etc. And the other pattern I'm looking at says for round 1 increase every st (16 sc) round 2: inc every other st (24 sc). Can someone explain these in really really easy terms? I'm just not getting it.

oops I forgot to detail something...when you say put two sc in every stitch, is that exactly how it sounds, or is there a trick to it?

for a flat spiral this is what I do: work the 10 singles in the ring, put a pin in the first one, I use those little gold safety pins. some times it says do not join!! this means not to join the 10th sc to the first sc with a slip stitch, but to just jump up on the first sc with the 2 stitches of the next round.

round 2 make 2 singles in each stitch of the previous row. Exactly what it says, do 2 single crochets in each of the stitches around to the pin again. Since I hate moving the pin, I count 10 singles in round 1, 20 stitches in round 2, 30 stitches in round 3 etc.

Ok, round 3: make 2 single stitches in first single of the row, make 1 single in the next stitch, make 2 singles in the 3rd stitch. 1 single in 4th stitch and on around

Round 4: make 2 singles in first stitch, make 1 single in each of next 2 stitches, make 2 singles in 4th stitch, make 1 single in stitches 5 and 6 and on around that way.

clear as muddy water now???

So that the work will lay flat you increase the number of stitches but spread the extras around so they don't bunch up.

"Round 1 increase every st (16 sc)" - put two stitches in every stitch. You should end up with a total of 16 stitches.

"Round 2 inc every other st (24 sc)" -- put one stitch in the first, 2 stitches in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, etc. You are adding 8 stitches but spreading them out.

How many stitches you add to each round really depends on the pattern.

to make a spiral crochet a sequence approximately two times as long as you like the spiral to be then single crochet 4 single crochets in each and every sew working back to the commencing up of the chain.
