I live in Connecticut and have patio tpmatoes growing in pots. I use Miracle Grow and also a Fruit & Vegetable Insect Spray.
Why do about 40% of them have to be thrown away?

I think that good soil and regular even watering [not too much or too little] is often the best solution - and rotating locations [not tomatoes in the same spot every time.] Look up "blossom end rot." See the picture at link below...

Usually it is called "blossom end rot" and here in NC, they say it comes from too much water. However, I found in my years of tomatoes, that it always on the first tomatoes of each plant. As soon as you see the brown spots, pull them off and discard. Usually the next to bare are not like that. Too much Miracle Gro is not good either. Good Luck!

They've probably been infested with insects and once the skin is broken, the bacteria take over and the tomatoes rot. Maybe you should pick them before they ripen on the vine and let them ripen in the house. They won't taste as good, but at least you won't be throwing so much of your crop away.

I think you left them out there too long.
