The 10th Philippine president (1965-1986) Ferdinand Edralin Marcos (b1917- d1989) began his career in politics with the "alleged" murder of Julio Nalundasan in 1935, and ended it with the "alleged" murder of Benigno Aquino, Jr., in 1983. Some believe his entire life was "allegedly" based on fraud, deceit, and plunder, and his two decades as president have come to epitomize the worst excesses of autocratic rule.

Ferdinand Marcos became a bar topnotcher despite of being jailed for the alleged crime of murdering his father's political opponent at the time he was reviewing for the bar exams. He was brilliant, an eloquent speaker and a ladies' man, to boot. He and his wife, Imelda, ruled the country for like 20 years - made the country great and green, at the same time, plundered the country's coffers. International loans did not make it to the country's treasury but to the couple's numerous bank accounts, mostly in foreign banks.
Marcos made a last ditch attempt at retaining his presidency by cheating in a snap election that pitted him against Corazon Aquino, Ninoy's wife. That move angered thousands of Filipinos on top of being accused as the alleged mastermind in the assassination of Ninoy. Thus, Edsa Revolution 1 came to be and brought the Marcoses running to Hawaii with their friend's, US Pres. Ronald Reagan, help and blessings.
Ferdinand Marcos would have been a great statesman if he hadn't been too greedy for power and wealth. Too, if he hadn't had a wife, who came from a very poor family (she came from an illigitimate branch of the Romualdezes), who was equally ambitious and materialistic. They were a great couple, like Bonnie and Clyde, though they did not use guns to rob the people of their money. Oh well, so much for a sad part of Philippine history that is best forgotten and buried ten feet under the ground.

A tyrant who let his wife, Imelda, bury herself with expensive shoes when his countrymen were looking through the garbage dump of Smokey mountain for something to eat. And now Imelda and the rest of the Marcos clan are still beloved and still running for office in the Philippines? Why? Why indeed!!

Ferdinand Edralin Marcos
(b. Ilocos Norte, 11 Sept. 1917; d. 28 Sept. 1989) Philippino; President 1965 – 86 The son of a politician, Marcos studied law at the University of the Philippines. As a law student he was accused of murdering a political opponent of his father, but Marcos defended himself and secured his own acquittal. During the Second World War he led a Philippine army unit in the anti-Japanese resistance and was held prisoner in the Bataan prison camp.
Marcos was elected to the Philippines House of Representatives in 1949, standing in Ilocos Norte on behalf of the Liberal Party. In 1959 he secured election to the Senate and became its presiding officer in 1963. He switched his allegiance to the Nacionalista Party and, promising a "New Society", was elected President in November 1965.
In November 1969 Marcos became the first President of the Philippines to be re-elected for the second time. Faced with an increasing Communist insurgency, economic mismanagement, and loss of political office, Marcos declared martial law on 21 September 1972.
The early promises of the martial law regime gave way to corruption and rapid political decay. Marcos perpetuated his rule by managed referenda and elections. He experimented with a number of political systems — parliamentary, French-presidential — in order to construct some legitimacy.
Martial law was lifted in 1981 and in June of that year Marcos was elected President for a six-year term in elections which were boycotted by the Opposition. The personal authority of Marcos began to fade rapidly after this, especially following the assassination at Manila Airport (August 1983) of his chief political rival, Benigno Aquino. This triggered widespread opposition to the regime and the combination of American pressure, economic crises, and internal Communist insurgency persuaded the President to call a national election in February 1986.
Although Marcos was declared the victor by the National Assembly, the elections were heavily rigged and sparked a peoples' power movement led by Mrs Corazón Aquino (wife of Benigno Aquino). Divisions within the army and the withdrawal of American support forced Marcos to leave the Philippines for exile in Hawaii.
Marcos is remembered as someone who established his dominance over the Philippines through his national philosophy of "new society" and national regeneration. His anti-Communism and American support were key factors in keeping him in power. His wife, Imelda Marcos, symbolized his corrupt and personalized rule, particularly after 1972.
