In my limited experience, republicans are either ignorant or selfish individuals. They are the ugly Americans, they never understood America the beautiful.

Hmm...ok, as obnoxious as you are in the way you asked the question, I have to admit that you're partly right. But only partly.
Republicans aren't perfect, and neither are Democrats. I agree with you on letting medicare negotiate drug prices and getting out of Iraq. But, until recently, Republicans WERE the peacebringers. Eisenhower ended the Korean War. Nixon got us out of Vietnam. Reagan brought an end to the Cold War. Democrats, typically, are the ones who start these wars. So, get some perspective of history before you do this broadbrush anti-Republican rant. Yeah, George W. Bush has been a disaster as a president. I think even most Republicans admit that amongst themselves. There are still a few diehards who can't admit it, but I think he's been terrible.
However, the Democrats are also terrible a lot of times. For example, can you tell me why the Democratic Congress hasn't done anything significant about the war?
But you wanted a big issue. Let's talk about Universal Health Care. First, I don't understand why you would want such a crazy thing. Everyone in this nation has access to health care. All they have to do is pay for it. It's just like any other good or service. You don't hear anyone going on about Universal Food Access, do you? Because we can all get food...we just need to pay for it.
Ah, but you think healthcare is too expensive, huh? Well, it didn't use to be, until we started doing all these government mandates. Ever since we created HMO's (which were really the last generations' idea of universal healthcare) costs of medical care have skyrocketed. That's because these centralized payment plans don't work. We've done two things. We subsidized it (or actually forced business to subsidize it), which causes prices to rise; and we took away the incentive for individuals to negotiate prices, which also caused prices to rise. It's an economic disaster. But the answer is most certainly NOT more subsidies and more separation of care from cost. If we do a gov't takeover (which is effectively what universal healthcare means), then costs will run even higher, quality of care will fall even lower, and accountability will be gone completely. Universal healthcare is not the panacea you imagine it to be. Frankly, I don't want to be in a situation where I no longer have choices in my own healthcare, which is what you're creating.
Free markets work better than socialism. Every time. Democrats typically don't understand that. Some Republicans don't either. But the fact that SOME Republicans DO understand that is why I tend to prefer Reps. over Dems.

When it comes to government, both parties have made their mistakes. I think your question comments more towards the attitude of the Republican party which does present itself with a "holier than thou" attitude. This shows most in their answers to question posted regarding any increase in taxes, the Iraq War, or the size of government. They can no longer claim to be the party of "smaller government" because it just isn't true. I've never understood this so-called "trickle down" economics that was supposed to happen when Reagan the Great was leader of our country because nothing "trickled down" for me. I didn't expect it...never have expected anything from the government. But I do understand the part about taxes and spending. I wish that I could just write checks to pay my bills and expenses and for whatever I want without worrying about the balance at the bank.....to the point of being so far in the red that there is no hope of getting out and back in the black. There arguement is that more people are working (minimum wage/service oriented jobs) and because of less taxes people have more money to spend therefore revenues are up. This would be good except for the fact that the current government course is to spend beyond what they are bringing in. The Republicans argue that by giving the big companies tax breaks that these big companies will expand and hire more personnell and keep the economy boosted. This idea would be great if those big companies actually expanded IN AMERICA and created jobs for America - but this is not the case. The big companies take advantage of the tax breaks by expanding into the cheap labor markets of foreign countries. Another person who answered your question brought up NAFTA....which Clinton did sign into law....(i think this was about the time that Rush Limbaugh must have started taking drugs because he was 100% positive that Clinton would not have the guts to sign the bill which in his opinion would be good for America)..had he vetoed the bill, it would still have become law because there was a Republican dominated Congress which had enough votes to override the veto. Clinton raised taxed during his administration (again, with a Republican Congress) but at the same time he brought down the national debt. This concept of decreasing the national debt is mysterious to the Republicans who only care about business. FoxNews is the best example I can think of in regards to their "holier than thou" attitude. For the record, I do hope that the Republicans regain power in the Congress and that the next President elect is a Republican. Once the Republicans have put us so far under that we will never be able to crawl out of the hole they dig for us, maybe folks will see the real difference between what the Republicans want and what the Democrats stand for and we can abolish the Republican party forever.

Well, to answer your high and mighty position...
I'm neither Republican nor Democrat. I am a fiscal conservative who expects each branch of government to take care of its own business and stay out of the other branch's authority. Roe v Wade was bad law because the Judiciary Branch - a liberal majority - made it law despite the people's views that it was a states rights issue and not a federal one. That's just one example.
As for the distinction between the two partys: Democrats love Big government and the taxes that go with it. Republicans, until recently, advocated less government and the less taxes that go with it.
FDR was not a great President. He did create government funded programs to put people to work, but in creating the New Deal, he implemented a tax structure that would make for a stagnate economy. WWII pulled us out of the Depression but also made our economy stagnate during the the 50's and 60's.
You preponderance for calling all Democrat Presidents great while stereotyping Republicans as f*cked up is a remarkable case of partisanship.
Harry Truman was a good President who was criticised during the Korean War. South Korea today has a vibrant economy based on democratic values. North Korea is a totalitarian police state.
President Eisenhower put more federal funds to work building our infrastructure, including the highway system we enjoy today.
There would be a Republic of South Vietnam today if President Johnson had allowed us to win the war against the communist North, but he buckled to the same types of critics that Bush, to his credit, ignores.
Jimmy Carter - he deserves no title to President - was the absolute worst person to occupy the White House and it only took half of his one term for Americans to recognize him as a eunuch.
Ronald Reagan rebuilt our military from Carter's ashes and cut taxes to reinvigorate a stagnate economy.
President Clinton reimposed those taxes which caused many small to mid-sized businesses to either close shop or layoff most of their employees to stay afloat. He also signed into law NAFTA, which created the giant sucking sound of jobs leaving the US.
President Bush authorized major tax cuts, which reinvigorated an economy in recession - caused by Clinton - and put money in both the people's pockets (where it belongs) as well as the Treasury. When more people are working, more tax receipts are generated. One would do well to ignore the rants from socialist-minded politicos who rant about "tax cuts for the rich" since the tax cuts were across the board and even eliminated taxes at a certain income level. To his discredit, he created another layer of government bureacracy. To his credit, he answered a terrorist attack with the proper response.
Universal health care is a myth. It is a "hot button" election issue which will go nowhere. Anyone who thinks life is better in Canada or Cuba should go live there. The sooner the better.
Eliminate the income tax and replace it with a national sales tax of 10% on everything from a candy bar to a Lexus and with more money in YOUR pocket, you can shop around for an affordable HMO or other health plan.
That's freedom!!!

Hmmmm.... Sounds to me that you may question yourself!! What kind of person asks another group of people why they think they have all the answers? What makes you so sure you do??? Apperantly you have drawn the conclusion that Republicans hold themselves above everyone else, and for you to come to that conclusion, you must feel as if they are. I know you are getting what I'm saying, but basically the only way you can feel what you have just expressed is if you doubt yourself and in result you are angry and taking it out on them for sounding so intelligent. I'm sorry that you feel so insecure in how you feel.. But attacking Republicans because they feel they are right is ridiculous in the fact that I'm sure when you speak about how you feel that you think that what you are saying is right and that you have all the answers.

Ask yourself this:
Why are you so caught up in a certain party. Why don't you stop affiliating yourself by party and think for yourself?
As far as I'm concerned if you want to wrap yourself in the flag of your party then don't get your panties in a wad when the other 'side' does the same thing.
Either get over it or don't play the game.
