THe anwer about the sword arm is close but you passed with your sword arm to the other person to protect your self.
Look at the following links and it explains why countrys drive on the right or left. To be honest... I am fom england ... and driving on the left to me is easier becasue i was taught that way....

The preferred side to pass the roman centurions chariots was there non sword side. AS far as I can tell there is actually no rhyme or reason for right hand drive.
