I've just been having one of those random, let's see what comes up hours on You Tube, which eventually took me to listening to a few old Dire Straits, or more particularly, Mark Knopfler, guitar solos.

I was wondering how many Answerers out there would even remember Dire Straits, let alone remember, that the lead singer and lead guitarist was Mark Knopfler.

Such great songs as 'Sultans of Swing', Brothers in Arms' and "Romeo and Juliet" all were penned by this rock genius, but I for one, haven't heard much from him for some seven years now - since 'Philadelphia' was released in 2000.

So - a question for those that read this - was Mark Knopfler one of the worlds greatest guitarists? Did he have a truly unique tone and delivery so good, it made you stop, listen and maybe cry? My own view is that he did. A truly wonderful musician, with a unique style, instantly recognisable after hearing only a few seconds of music.

Am I right, or maybe just holding on too tight to the 80's?

He's a strange one. Personally I think Dire Straits were excellent. You know its him, and it sounds so tasty, even now. I think he will always be underated compared to Hendrix and others just becasue of the decade hey were in.

Lets face it though he is one of the best.

Yes Yes Yes!

I'm 25, and Mark Knopfler is one of my favourite guitarists. His style of playing is very much his own, and I love it so much!

Not just his playing, but also his lyricism.

Among my favourite tracks are:

Tunnel of Love
What It Is
Brothers In Arms
The Man's Too Strong
Romeo & Juliet
Calling Elvis
Espresso Love
Private Investigations
Walk of Life
On Every Street
Love Over Gold
Sultans of Swing
Money for Nothing
Going Home

and others!

But as someone else said, you make it sound like he's dead!

Personally, I don't compare him to other guitarists, but put him on a par with:

Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Page
Lindsey Buckingham

All greats for various reasons.

,Knopfler is a unique and easily recognizable guitarist. He goes back to when rock music actually had a lead guitarist who played solos. Check out the Notting Hillbillies, a great Knopfler project.

Heard of him. Then I heard a Dire Straits song today on classic rock radio. I think it was "Calling Elvis". Mark Knopfler sounds pretty good. I'm definitely gonna look at his work.

He still is one of the greatest , new albums are
'Neck and Neck' with Chet Atkins and 'All the Roadrunning' with Emmylou Harris , also the solo album 'Golden Heart' . He still is far better than Clapton with a unique tone on the guitar and I still enjoy listening to his stuff .

I think he's a good guitarist but not one of my favorites. I liked how he helped out on a John Anderson album.
