What a great question! It is designed agreement between peoples who decided to meld their very similar but different desires for society. But it is also a coda, or law based system in order to run that very society they wish to preserve. This type of law based system is the basis of our republic. Originally, it was the founding document that created the government of this country, and set limits on what the govt was allowed to do, and what it could not do.

Today, it has become an empty promise -- a symbol of why this country was created -- something our govt has forgotten.

The first poster was correct -- now, it is little more than a piece of paper, a reminder of what we could have been -- trampled by our leaders, and ignored by the populace.

It was silly of me to believe it was a document that embodied the principles of our freedom.
