How does the government use satellites?
1. To watch the weather
2. To spy on and map the earth
3. To find yourself (Global Positioning System)
4. To transmits messages and communication

Weather satellites and telecommunication satellites where the first constructive use made of space. The military was there because it is important to know the weather over the battle field and at sea, and it is impossible to intercept a transmission made directly to a satellite and then to the Earth based receiver.

Spy satellites are just improved Weather and Land satellites. They were designed to spy on our enemies and to watch our friends. If Iran started massing troops on the border of Israel, we would probably inform our ally Israel. We watched the last North Korean missile test with our satellites.

The biggest improvement in satellite based military technology is the Global Positioning System; which allows us to locate an object to within 10 meters. This is how the US can hit an air vent, a window, or have a missile fly down a smoke stack on a specific building from anywhere in the world.

GPS works by simply trigonometry; the speed of radio = the speed of light which is a known constant. When you receive a signal from a GPS satellite it is sent out at a specific time interval and the GPS unit knows that. It calculates the time it takes to get each signal and that gives us the distance. Therefore we can use it to triangulate our exact position.

All a dumb WW2 era bomb need to use GPS is a guidance head connected to a GPS system and a set of guiding fins. The fins determine the travel of the missile so it will impact at the required coordinates. GPS units are small enough to fit into a single chip. You can put one in a shoe to track people, in cell phones, and a million other applications. When exact measurements are needed the GPS is there to help. From helping a farmer drive his tractor straight, to survey instruments, to weapons of war; GPS has a major effect on our lives.
