I find it difficult to believe that the concept of disliking the opposite gender applies to men only. And yet I can find no word in the dictionary that seems to fill that role for women. I suppose the question is not just about the etymology, but about the psychological concept that it implies. I would appreciate any thoughts anyone might care to post

Well, misanthropic would seem to imply that you dislike all people, which is the closest I can think. There's not a word that I know that means "man-hater" in English. As far as the "psychology" I don't think there is one. This is a sociological issue, not a psychological one. Women were second class citizens until the 1920s, and prior to that, there would not need to be a word that describes what a woman feels about men, since it didn't matter what they felt about anything.



MISANDRY is a NEW WORD - don't be fooled - it was coined by feminists in the 1970s. It does not speak to the sociological problem I outlined above, because it did not exist prior to the 70s. Here's an article explaining that:

The fact that they had to make the word up, speaks volumes about the reality of the subjugation of women up until this past century.
